Focus Area 2.4: Understand and Respect Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People.
Provide opportunities for students to develop understanding of and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and languages.
After meeting many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students over the last few years of my teaching career, motivated me to learn more about their culture and the way the students learn. To assist with this I had found a course on Plink called 'Working together Cultural Awareness Introduction'. This gave me a good insight to their culture, their values, what struggles certain families had come across and how I can promote their culture into my learning environments and programs. In regards to this, I had planned a lesson in an Earth and Space unit to explore their astronomy aspect of their culture, such as teaching students how Indigenous people would tell stories based on the positioning of the stars, the seasons and the weather. Students were also given a worksheet on this. Undertaking these activities with the students also allowed me to learn more about their culture too.
I had also found a online learning resource for educators which I had undertaken located on the Australian Catholic University Online Learning Environment Website. On this resource, a powerpoint was provided to learners which allowed them to explore Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history in order to better understand the importance of culture and cultural identity for learners for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. This resource helped me integrate their learning and understandings into my own teaching programs, especially from a science and classroom teacher 1 day a week. I found that especially in the classroom, students had enjoyed learning about the history and Indigenous culture. To continue on with this, students then began to look at symbols used in their artwork, and how they represent a story. Students then created artwork on a boomerang cut out, and told their stories by recording over a picture and posting it on seesaw.
