Focus area 6.2: Engage in professional learning and improve practice
Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice, targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities.
As an early career teacher, there are many aspects of my teaching career that I wanted to improve. To help me get through my first teaching contract I actively participated in an Early Career Teacher Mentor program that was undertaken in my school, consistently engaged in several online professional learning courses and took the opportunity to engage in face-to-face development days.
One example on how I reached this standard was participating in the Early Career Teacher Program, which had online courses and also face-to-face development days. Undertaking this program, allowed me to develop skills on how to set myself up as a successful educator and maintain a healthy work to life balance. I had undertaken several professional development days, where I was able to mix with other professionals and early career teachers. During these days I had obtained several resources and ideas that I have been able to use in my classrooms. Using the online program, allowed me to use a reflection journal, and take several notes on how to be a powerful educator. When using the mentor program, it allowed me to work with a colleague at school, to set myself goals and to gain knowledge and ideas off of her. It was ideal that she was the other science teacher on site, which allowed me to work specially on my job role at the school.
Being in the 21st century, I had also taken an online course on how to successfully teach in a 21st century classroom. Here it gave me insights on how students are perceived to learn in our classrooms today in an effective manner and how I can cater for them. These courses also highlighted the importance of maintaining a healthy work and life balance, so along side of this I had undertaken a course on Plink which allowed me to obtain knowledge on how to maintain stress. This became helpful when I had some stressful personal issues outside of work, and dealing with the stresses of being a new teacher at a new school. (6.1, 6.3, 6.4, 7.4, 1.2)
