Focus Area 3.4 - Select and use resources
Demonstrate knowledge of a range of resources, including ICT, that engage students with their learning
Providing students with a range of resources for them to learn, I have found ensures student engagement in my learning programs. It allows students to use ICT to access further information by using videos, powerpoints, podcasts and also enhances their research skills by providing them with the opportunity to determine reliable resources. For students learning in Design and Technology and Art, I had asked to students to create a STEAM project which looked at environmental problems, and then develop a solution to it. With this they had to also create a small prototype of their solution. Prior to making it, students had to research and find information on how they knew that the issue they had chosen was impacting their local community, and how their solution could potentially solve it. I had asked students to obtain information in the following ways, giving them the option of how much information they had to collect using those resources. This allowed students to be engage, try new learning avenues, work on their weaknesses and use their strengths.
- A survey
- The internet
- A book
- A newspaper article
- A video
- A powerpoint
- Information sheet
For the overall presentation, students had the option to either present it as a video, orally, poster, report, podcast or book. Allowing them to test all resources, not only allowed me to gain insight on how they feel comfortable and can learn best, but it kept them engaged with their learning tasks. Students were able to draw or create their final product which helped for students that prefer to construct their ideas, rather than put pencil to paper.
