Focus Area 7.3 Engage with the parents/carers.
Establish and maintain respectful collaborative relationships with parents/ carers regarding their children’s learning and wellbeing.
Standard 7.3 refers to a teacher’s ability to understand and employ strategies to work with and communicate sensitively, effectively, and confidentially with parents or caregivers. Using ICT to facilitate this communication is an excellent means to engage with the parents or carers of our students in many situations. As an educator, I believe that it is important for families to be actively involved in their child's learning in any form. I generally prefer face-to-face conversations or phone calls to allowed a more indepth and beneficial conversation, however in some circumstances I can't always undertake those actions. Integrating ICT for effective communication had been a vast contribution to evidence on how I can engage with families and student learning.
The tool Seesaw has been a wonderful communication tool that I have used in my classes, not only to communicate with families about certain matters, but to look out for student wellbeing, involve them in student learning tasks and also display student work and achievement. During the pandemic of the coronavirus, I had been using Seesaw actively to communicate with families about any concerns or questions they may have prior to the commencement of online learning. At this point in time, to maintain student's wellbeing, I would post positive photo's of students work they had done in class, such as their sewing projects. I also allowed students to comment on those pieces of work so they could communicate with their peers who were learning from home. In the lead up to Term 2, I had sent spelling words and information to families to allow students and their parents carers to know their spelling words and groups for the first four weeks. I had also been posting some learning tasks that students could do at home, that were very similar to those that students were doing in the classroom. Using the tool for any concerns about students behaviour, work or wellbeing has also been an effective way to engage families. (4.1, 3.4, 3.5, 3.7, 2.6 )
